The Land Authority for Wales was established under the Community Land Act 1975. Its role was to buy land on behalf of the Welsh Government for industrial or other forms of development in order to encourage economic growth. As a quango body it was not part of the Welsh central government but was a Welsh Government sponsored body. It was abolished in 1999 and its functions passed to the Welsh Development Agency in a widely publicised Welsh initiative to reduce quango bodies (quasi-autonomous non-government organisations) known as 'the bonfire of the quangos'.
In 2006, the records passed as gifts to the Welsh Government upon the abolition of the Welsh Development Agency. Although the records were previously not public records their subsequent custody by the Welsh Government means that the records are now classed as Welsh public records under the Government of Wales Act 2006.
