The Welsh Development Agency (WDA) was established in 1976 as a result of the Welsh Development Agency Act 1975. Its purpose was: to further the economic development of Wales; to promote industrial efficiency and international competitiveness of Welsh industry; creating and safeguarding employment, and; improving the environment of Wales having regard to existing amenity.
The Government of Wales Act 1998 extended the powers of the WDA to cover the social and community responsibilities held by the Development Board for Rural Wales and the Land Authority for Wales. On 1 April 2006 the WDA was subsumed into the Welsh Assembly Government.
