This series consists of registered files relating to encouraging the use of Welsh in areas other than education, and includes the creation of the Welsh Language Board; the use of Welsh in the public sector; Welsh Language Act 1993 and Welsh language Schemes; equal status of Welsh and English; Welsh speaking community in Patagonia; and funding of S4C, the fourth TV channel in Wales.

RCP, s.3.1.1 - the principal policies and actions of the UK central government and English and Welsh Governments. Section 5.10 of OSP 7 (Welsh Office) – Cultural matters, including responsibilities relating to the Welsh language. Records relating to the formulation and implementation of policies intended to safeguard and encourage the use of the Welsh language were selected.
The Welsh Education Office had five divisional areas working within it. These were:
Schools Division, covering the administration of government policy concerning all matters relating to maintained, voluntary independent schools in Wales except building programmes; matters relating to the curriclum and examinations.
Further Education Division 1, covering higher education; supply and training of teachers; liaison with the University of Wales; UGC and CNAA; tuition fees and other student matters.
Further Education Division 2, covering non advanced further education; 16 to 19 years provision of education; student grants; liaison with the Manpower Services Commission; adult education (including state bursaries); youth service; grants for village halls and community centres.
Education Services Division, covering educational building; school meals, milk, transport and other benefits; publications; statistics, research; external relations.
HM Inspectorate, covering professional advice to the Secretary of State on all educational matters; assessing the educational process in all educational institutions other than universities through inspection and reporting; specialist and general advice to teachers, institutions and local education authorities through visits, courses and publications; liaison with local education authorities and other statutory and voluntary bodies concerned with education.
By 1984 responsibility for Welsh language education had moved to the Education Services Division. In 1995, the Education Services Division was disbanded, with responsibility for Welsh language education being passed to the newly created Culture and Recreation Division within the Welsh Education Office.
