In the summer of 1948, neurologist Ludwig Guttmann set up a sporting competition between patients. It was the birth of the Paralympic Games.

The General Division was responsible for all matters relating to the Welsh culture and Welsh language, inter-departmental coordination in the non-economic field; tourism ; reclamation of derelict land; commons registration, common land and allotments; caravan sites; gypsies; National Parks; countryside; Historic Buildings Council for Wales (and successors); listing of buildings of special architectural and historical interest. By 1979, a separate Ancient Monuments Branch had been created under the Local Government, General and Housing Group.
