Folios 284-285. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board, to Mr Edward Ellison, Schoolmaster of the Newcastle under Lyme Poor Law Union Workhouse. The letter is to inform the schoolmaster that the Poor Law Union have received a report from the inspector, Mr [Andrew Doyle], about the complaints against him from the workhouse. The school is in a very unsatisfactory state and he has failed to exercise due control over the boys and maintain proper discipline in the school. Although the schoolmaster had only 14 boys under his care there had been 12 complaints brought to the notice of the guardians regarding insubordination and misconduct on the part of the boys during the previous month. The Board understand that the schoolmaster intended to resign the office of schoolmaster and he had actually signed a letter of resignation but that he had subsequently withdrawn it. The Board wish to know if the schoolmaster intends to resign his office. The Board will instruct their inspector to make enquiries as to the schoolmaster's conduct and the management of the school.
