Folio 277. Letter from Joseph Knight, Clerk to the Guardians of the Newcastle under Lyme Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, concerning the parliamentary borough of Newcastle under Lyme. Knight forwards to the Board the returns of male occupiers in the parish [not included]. The poor rate is paid by the occupier. Property under the value of £10 paid the poor rate of half a crown in the pound last year. Newcastle parish is under the Board of Health Act and there is a district rate annually of 2 shillings and 6 pence in the pound. The 'rateable value' of property in Newcastle is 5 per cent less than the 'gross estimated rental.'
