Folio 163. Draft letter from the Poor Law Board, to Mr Twemlow, [Chairman of the Board of Guardians of the Newcastle under Lyme Poor Law Union], regarding the illness of the clerk. The Board gave permission for the Newcastle Union to appoint a temporary substitute and according to Article 193 of the general consolidated order of 1847, the new person is to be paid a reasonable compensation for his services. The Board still require details of Mr Harding's illness, and if it is a permanent discharge from office. The temporary substitute is a solicitor, and he will be paid one guinea a week.
