Folios 161-162. Letter from Thomas Twemlow, Chairman of the Board of Guardians of the Newcastle under Lyme Poor Law Union, resident of Betley Court Newcastle, to the Poor Law Board, informing them of an extraordinary meeting that was being called, owing to the illness of Mr Harding [Samuel Harding], Clerk to the guardians. It was important to appoint a substitute as soon as possible. He also asks from which fund the payment for the substitute would come from.
Annotated: Mr Doyle 'are you aware of the nature of the clerks illness, and how long he has been ill' 28 April 1858. Harding has been in bad health for some time. He is unlikely to be able to discharge his duties as clerk. A D [Andrew Doyle, Poor Law Inspector].
Also annotated: It would be proper to appoint a temporary substitute under 19 Geo III c 6.
Ask for further information about the clerks illness and whether he is likely to be permanently unable to perform his duties.
