Folios 142-143. Letter from Thomas Sherratt of Talk on the Hill, Near Lawton, Cheshire, to the Poor Law Board, regarding the appointment of an officer for the collection of rates for the parish of Audley in the Newcastle under Lyme Poor Law Union.
He seeks clarification of Act 59 Geo III c 12 s 7 regarding powers of the vestry to fix the salary and define the duties of a paid officer. Also whether the consent of the Board is required for the appointment of overseers and assistant overseers under this act.
Vestry propose to appoint an officer to collect poor rates at £60 per annum.
Annotated: if an officer is appointed under Act 59 Geo III c 12 the Board's consent is not necessary and the vestry can define the duties and fix the salary of the assistant overseer which may include the collection of the poor rate.
