The Radioactive Waste Administration was responsible for radioactive waste management policy, and the administration of the Radioactive Substances Act 1960. It also provided the secretariat for the Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee.
In 1987 responsibility passed to the newly formed Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP), who also inspected premises and made assessments of plants under the Radioactive Substances Act. In 1991 the Policy and Administration Division took over from Radioactive Substances within HMIP. This division also had responsibility for HMIP international liaison, emergency planning, and the development of the National Radiation Monitoring Network.
