Administrative / biographical background

The Overseas Finance (Statistics) Division, a support branch of the Finance Division, provided general guidance on the balance of payments of other countries, and the international monetary situation.

In 1962 the OF(S) Division became known as the Finance (Statistics) F(S) Division and took on work regarding Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Working Parties, sterling area and home financial statistics.

In September 1963 work on home financial statistics was transferred to Finance Home Division I. Finance (Statistics) Division had a close liaison with Central Economic Division (CE) when it was formed in January 1967.

In January 1969 F(S) Division became known as Finance (Balance of Payments) Division F(BP).

The division's most important work was the analysis, presentation and forecasting of the balance of payments (and, to a lesser extent, the international monetary situation generally) of other countries.

The division also contributed to a series of regular and ad hoc forecasting exercises, both short and long term. It was also involved in interdepartmental committees on the world economy.
