Folio 335. Letter from A A [Alfred Austin, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], Birmingham, to the Poor Law Commission. He visited the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union that morning and the medical officer's report showed a diminution of cases of illness; he hopes it will end in a fortnight. The guardians have altered the diet of the inmates on a temporary basis, substituting meat for soup at dinner on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. The state of the union, due to the drought in the agricultural portion, and the nailing [illegible] in the other portion, renders it desirable that the prohibitive order should not be suspended longer than necessary. The Commission asks for weekly reports on the state of health of the inmates, and recommends that the guardians seek the opinion of the medical officer on a change to the dietary by substituting porridge, milk or rice for the gruel currently served at breakfast.
