Folio 328. Letter from Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, about a female domestic servant from Redditch who is in custody for concealing the birth of her illegitimate child. As there is an issue of cruelty, the parishioners wish her to be prosecuted provided the overseers can meet the costs from the poor rate, as the county will not allow costs in this kind of case. He wishes to know if any statute allows this.
Annotated: the overseers do not have powers to prosecute or to meet the costs from the poor rate.
