Folios 322-323. Letter from W A Greening, to the Poor Law Commission. The union [Bromsgrove Poor Law Union] bye-laws, confirmed by the Commission on 17 May 1843, say that one of the workhouse inmates, approved by the visiting committee, should be placed in the porter's lodge, when the latter is temporarily absent during the day, and that one of the old men should similarly be appointed to go on errands. A pauper was duly appointed to take letters to and from the post office. It seems that the pauper also takes letters daily to the home of one of the guardians some two miles away, and carries out other errands for his family. Greening thinks this is contrary to the rules of the workhouse.
Annotated: the bye-laws cannot immediately be found.
Paper Number: 7453/B/1844.
Poor Law Union Number 526.
