Folio 289. Letter from Thomas Day to the Poor Law Commission. He reports that as the number of candidates for the office of guardian in several parishes is the same as the number of places, they are duly elected as from 25 March 1844. In other parishes where the number of candidates exceeds the number of places, elections will be held but the results may not be known until after 25 March 1844. As that is the date of their weekly meeting, he asks whether the current guardians are still competent to act. He also asks if it counts as the last meeting of the previous year, or the first of the new, when the chairman and vice chairman need to be elected. Should the list of candidates include those who have indicated themselves unwilling to stand?
