Folios 268-269. Letter from Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission about William Houghton, 37, an able-bodied agricultural labourer from Alvechurch, who has applied for relief. He has recently lost his wife and has children aged 14, 12, nine, seven (Hannah Houghton), five (Joseph Houghton), three, and one and a half [the other names are given but illegible]. He works on the turnpike road for 12s per week; his only other source of income is the 3s and 2s 6d earned occasionally by his two older sons. Hannah and Joseph have been taken into the workhouse and the Commission is asked to sanction this.
Annotated by A A [Alfred Austin, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner]: given Houghton's wages and the likelihood of his sons finding permanent employment, the relief should be made temporary.
Annotated: consent for three months.
Paper Number: 1711/B/1844.
Poor Law Union Number 526.
Counties: Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
