Description

Folios 262-263. Letter from Thomas Day, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bromsgrove Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission in response to their circular letter of 21 December 1843. Vagrants have only been housed in the workhouse when they were ill, and the guardians have therefore not passed any resolutions in respect of their working in return for food and lodging. Previously vagrants were housed at lodging houses in Bromsgrove (the only town except Redditch where they stay the night), but a year ago the guardians hired two tenements, one for males and one for females, where they are cared for by a man and his wife, who live there rent free. On average, last quarter 45 vagrants were housed each week at a cost of 6s, compared to a cost of 14s 6d last year. The houses are superintended by the assistant overseer of Bromsgrove and are kept better ventilated and cleaner than ordinary lodging houses.
