Letter containing two extracts. The first dated 22 October from Captain Stuart of the 'Royal Ann' gally at Leith Roads relating to the [Jacobite] rebels in Scotland. Intelligence that the rebels marching eastwards were prevented from reaching the southern Firth [of Forth], taking Edinburgh and so cutting off the government's commander the [Campbell loyalist] Duke of Argyll's communications and provisions. Although upwards of 700 rebels landed at North Berwick the rebel Lord [the Earl] of Marr was unable to proceed from Stirling. The second extract dated 25 October from Sir Nicholas Trevanion concerns a French merchantman of five guns (carrying brandy, snuff and linen cloth) 'hovering about Torbay'.
