Administrative / biographical background

The Queen's Remembrancer Act 1859 transferred responsibility for the audit of Sheriffs' Accounts from the Commissioners of Audit to the Treasury. Sheriffs are responsible for the collection of fines imposed by the courts within the area of their shrievalty and they accounted to the Treasury for these sums collected, which form part of the Hereditary Revenues of the Crown. In 1976, responsibility for the audit of Sheriffs' Accounts passed to the Lord Chancellor under a Transfer of Functions Order (SI 1976/229).
