The committee's functions included:
Authorisation of expenditure where necessary followed by formal Treasury sanction in confirmation of the committee's authorityPower to signify approval of groups of contracts which fell within the scope of any general arrangements which they had approved
The committee also received periodical returns of the amount of the contracts placed by Defence Departments together with progress reports of the expenditure incurred on the programmes as a whole.
The committee's records encompass the period 1936-1950, after which time it went into abeyance.
