In 1965 a new research council, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) was set up with responsibilities for research into the natural environment. Nature Conservancy (from 1973 the Nature Conservancy Council and from 1991 English Nature) was transferred to the council, although its remit remained virtually unchanged.
The NERC funds and carries out impartial scientific research in the sciences of the environment. Its work covers the full range of atmospheric, earth, biological, terrestrial and aquatic sciences. It is the lead organisation in the UK for research, survey, long-term monitoring, training, and provision of impartial scientific advice on all apects of the environment and its natural resources.
NERC supports several research centres and institutes, including: the British Antarctic Survey; the British Geological Survey; the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology; and the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory. It also supports a number of collaborative centres of excellence and subject-based designated data centres for the storage and distribution of environmental data.
