The Establishments Superannuation (ES) Division was set up in 1938. In 1962 it took over the pensions work of the Law and Order (LO) Division, which was abolished at the same time.
The Civil Service Department took over responsibilities for superannuation policy in November 1968. This responsibility was transferred to the Treasury on the abolition of Civil Service Department in 1981.
