Description

Files of the Overseas Finance (OF) Division of the Treasury. They deal mainly with financial relations and negotiations with overseas countries and international bodies and agencies, including the European Free Trade Association, European Economic Community, International Monetary Fund, Dollar Export Council, General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. There is a wide variety of material relating to foreign exchange, balance of payments, sterling balances, trade policy, exports, and the Marshall Plan.

Also includes files of the F series which were reregistered in the OF series in 1948.

Administrative / biographical background

The Overseas Finance (OF) Division was set up in 1938. In 1948 the Imperial and Foreign (IF) Division took over responsibilities for United Nations questions. In 1950 the Exchange Control (EC) Division took over responsibility for 'Cheap Sterling' and in 1955 it took over all work on imports (except those financed under the Mutual Security Programme), and commodity and tariff questions.
