Administrative / biographical background

The Central Economic Planning Staff was established in May 1947 and became a section of the Treasury in November of the same year.

The section dealt with a number of committees and working groups. They were:

the Headquarters Building Committee and Priorities Sub-Committee, the Joint Committee on Working of Steel Distribution Scheme, the Commonwealth Liaison Committee Steel Working Group, the Economic Survey Working Party, the Economic Planning Board, the Fuel Allocation Committee, the London Committee (and sub groups) Programme Committee, the Export Committee and Plans Sub-Committee, the Tourism Working Party, the Overseas Negotiations Committee, the Import Diversion Committee, the Imports Substitution Panel, the Investment Programmes Committee, the Agricultural Output Committee, the Colonial Development Committee, the Middle East Official Committee, the Far East Official Committee, the Committee of Industrial Productivity, the Commonwealth Economic Development Committee and the Committee on Control of Investment.

The section also dealt with investment programmes, materials allocation, economic surveys and programmes, the economic aspect of defence problems, and establishment questions. It liaised with the Capital Issues Committee (CIC) and with other departments and the dominions on the UK Long-Term Programme produced for the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC), and provided general briefing on home economic questions.

The section's work was taken over by the Home and Overseas Planning Staff Division in 1956.
