Administrative / biographical background

The Law and Order (LO) Division was created in 1938. It dealt with a wide range of issues related to law and order, civil defence and legal services.

In 1962 the Law and Order Division was abolished in a Treasury re-organisation. Its responsibilities for complementing and grading staff were transferred to Establishments (Complementing), (EC) Division, and for pensions to Establishments (Superannuation), (ES) Division. Home Office, Scottish Home and Health Department, legal aid, child care, civil defence, police and prisons matters went to Social Services (SS) Division and pay and conditions, and other remaining subjects, except those transferred to Social Services Division, were given to the Civil Pay (CP) Divisions.

Following the creation of the Civil Service Department in 1968, many of the departments for which Civil Pay (CP) Division was responsible were transferred to the Social Services (SS) Division.
