Administrative / biographical background

The Government and Allied Services (GS) Division was created in 1938. In 1951 the Land and Buildings (LB) Division was integrated into this division, and as a result some functions of the former were transferred to Social Services (SS) Division and Establishments General, (Departmental Establishments) (EG) Division.

In 1958, responsibilities for ancient monuments and historic buildings were transferred from this division to Arts, Science and Lands (AS) Division followed in 1959 by its "Lands" work. In 1962 Government and Allied Services (GS) Division was abolished, and its work divided between other supply and establishment divisions.
