Administrative / biographical background

The Division's predecessor, the Minerals, Metals, Electrical Engineering, Process Plant and Industrial Technologies Division had been concerned with the supply of raw materials and non-ferrous metals as well as liaison with the electrical engineering, process plant and industrial technologies industries and was located in Industrial Sponsorship Group (A). In 1977 responsibility for minerals and metals passed to the Paper, Timber, Minerals, Metals and Miscellaneous Division within Industrial Sponsorship Group (B) leaving the Division with three branches:- Electrical Engineering Industries, Industrial Technologies and Mechanical Handling Industries and Process Plant Industries. The Division was concerned with the sponsorship of and liaison with the electrical engineering industry which included heavy and light engineering (eg power stations and domestic equipment), the process plant industry which included process plant equipment and fabrications and the industrial technologies and mechanical handling industries which included construction equipment and low cost automation.

In 1980 the Division was renamed the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Division when responsibility for industrial technology moved to the Electronic Applications Division.
