The records comprise small collections of papers, usually created by eminent persons, noted bodies or relating to historical circumstances, that have been gifted or loaned on deposit to The National Archives by a private source.

Gifts:

  • Lady Margaret Sackville: private correspondence received from James Ramsay MacDonald: RW 1.
  • John da Cunha papers: RW 2.
  • Law Society, Registers of Admission: RW 3
  • Sir Richard Perryn (Sergeant-at-Law): letter of resignation: RW 36.
Note
Legal status of the papers depends upon whether the private papers have been gifted to or deposited with TNA. In the former case they are public records, whereas in the latter they are private records

The Public Record Act 1958, section 2.4(h) allows the Keeper of Public Records to accept gifts and loans of records. Gifts of records become public records whereas loaned records are privately owned.
