The Division was established to provide support to industry in the field of microprocessor (later micro-electronics) applications. It sponsored the electronic components industry, including electronic points of sale and vending machines, weighing machines and visual displays, the opto-electronics and electro-optics industries and the scientific instruments and electronic test and measuring instruments industries. The process was managed through various projects and schemes managed by the Division:- the Micro Application Project (MAP), the Electronics Components Industry Scheme (ECIS), the Micro-electronics Industry Support Programme (MISP), the Computer Aided Design Manufacturing and Testing Scheme (CADMAT), the Fibre Optics and Opto-Electronics Support Scheme (FOS) and the Joint Opto Electronics Research Scheme (JOERS).
