Records of the Research Technology Policy Division

The Division was responsible for the provision of advice to Government on technology policy and strategy and the provision of scientific and technical information and data for both Government and industry. Allied to this remit was liaison with the Research Associations, management of the research establishments and transfer of technology from them to industry through the auspices of the Manufacturing Advisory Service in particular. There were also links with Design Council and the Design Advisory Service. The Division was also responsible for the management and organisation of the Metrology and Standards Requirements Board and the co-ordination and exploitation of the work of scientific counsellors at UK posts overseas.

The Research and Technology Policy Division was formed in 1982. Previously responsibility for the provision of scientific information and data for government and industry and the development of policy and strategy in scientific matters lay with the Research and Technology Requirements and Space Division. The Space and the Post Office Division was created in 1983 to promote sponsorship of the space and ground station industries and the Post Office and National Girobank. The remainder of the work was undertaken by the Research and Technology Policy Division. Between 1983 and 1986 some of the work of the division - technology transfers from research establishments to industry - was undertaken by the newly created Quality and Education Division. In 1986 this division was abolished and its work re-allocated to the Research and Technology Policy Division of the Department of Trade and Industry.
