INDIA BY CECIL BEATON: Photographs taken by Cecil Beaton whilst in India. Bombay, various scenes including cotton factory, streets and markets and the Government Food Store. 'Bombay is the centre of India's cotton industry from which cloth is exported all over the world, and the mills provide the chief means of employment for men and women in the city itself and from all the surrounding districts. This series of pictures taken in the Spring Mills, Bombay, shows the entries process of cotton manufacture from the arrival of the raw cotton at the mill to the despatch of the finished cloth. The Spring Mills are of exceptional interest because the workers obtain their food through the Bombay Rationing Scheme, the first scheme of its kind in India, and because there is an up-to-date creche attached to the mills where the children of women workers are looked after during working hours.' The 12 photographs within this document are described at item level.
