INDIA BY CECIL BEATON: Photographs taken by Cecil Beaton whilst in India. 'Fort of Golconda, Hyderabad region'. Views of the fortress and surrounding countryside. 'Golconda is a fortress and ruined Indian city in the Nizam's Dominions five miles west of Hyderabad. In former times it was the capital of the large and powerful kingdom of the Deccan, ruled by the Kutb Shahi dynasty. Since that day it has seen much war and bloodshed and changed hands many times. The old fort, scene of many a siege, stands on a rocky ridge of granite, and is still strong and in good repair. It is now used as the Nizam's treasury and also as the state prison. Around it tower the famous tombs of the ancient Kutb Shahi Kings, enormous mausoleums in the arid desert.' The 14 photographs within this document are described at item level.
