INDIA BY CECIL BEATON: Photographs taken by Cecil Beaton whilst in India. 'Hyderabad City.' Views of the city and its university. 'Hyderabad City, capital of the Nizam's Dominions, lies on the right bank of the river Musi, with Golconda to the west and the residency and its bazaars and the British cantonment of Secunderabad to the north-east. The city, in shape a parallelogram with an area of over two square miles, was founded in 1589 by Mahommed Kuli, the fifth of the Kutb Shahi Kings. It is surrounded by stone walls with thirteen gates, and was completed in the time of the first nizam who have Hyderabad his capital.' 'Osmania University, Hyderabad, was established in 1918. Its gives instructions in the faculties of the Arts, Science, Law, Muslim Theology, Medicine, Engineering and Education through the medium of Urdu, thus marking a new departure in Indian education. English is a compulsory language in all B.A. and B.Sc. exams and exams leading up to that stage. The university also includes a training college for teachers and a women's college, teaching up to M.A. and M.Sc. standards. The 9 photographs within this document are described at item level.'
