Kariba Dam, River Nile. 'Each day, the dust and turmoil of the Kariba hydro-electric project - symbolised by the huge dam wall astride the Zambesi River - reverberates from the 420-foot high concrete wall, filling the valley, echoing to the new township on the heights of the gorge. Each day, an army of Europeans and Africans work together to pursue the dream of David Livingstone - to convert the great river into a channel through which freedom and prosperity can reach the heart of Africa. The first stage of the project, which is to be innaugurated by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother on May 17, will supply the Copperbelt with 600,000 kilowatts from the underground power station with British turbines and generators - among the largest in the world. When completed, however, the scheme will supply 8,500,000 kilowatt hours a year, enough to keep pace with the rapid economic and industrial growth of the Federation.'
