Description

OFFICIAL VISITS: Malayan dignitaries. British and Malayan dignatories attending a variety of events and ceremonies, including the installation of the new High Commissioner (items 1 to 4, and 14 to 15), and the installation of a Raja (items 5 to 13). There are also photographs of the Sultan of Perak (items 16 to 18) and of the Sir Edward Gent (Items 19 to 20). 'The Installation of His Excellency Sir Henry Gurney, K.C.M.G., as High Commissioner for the Federation of Malaya.' Six photographs of the ceremony. 'A Raja is Installed.' 'In March this year H H . Tuan Syed Putra, C.M.G., was installed as Raja of Perlis, most north-westerly State in Malaya. The celebrations covered three days, from March 11 to March 13. The procession, accompanied by all the colourful pageantry of the East, began at the Istana with a man carrying the State Sword and State Kris, four attendants carrying an open yellow umbrella, four more carrying spears to one of which is hung the Royal Standard and to another the State Flag. Four women attendants carried the'Paun and Batil' (Batil is a silver bowl of incense and Paun a cob containing sirah-chewing requisites). The new Raja succeeds Almartum Tuan Syed Alwi bin Tuan Syed Safee Jamalullail.' Individual photographs are described at item level.
