POLICE: 'Policewomen in Training. There are 2,600 women serving in the regular police forces of England and Wales. Their life in the force begins with a 13-weeks course at a police training centre. One of these is at Ryton-on-Dunsmore, near Coventry. Here they get the same training as men recruits, except for physical education. Among other things the women are taught judo, basic law and general police duties. As part of their practical training they attend mock magistrates courts, where they learn how to give evidence and conduct themselves in the witness box. Mock accidents are also staged both to improve their training in first aid and to give them practice in taking statements from witnesses.' Individual photographs are described at item level.
