Selection and destruction information

Agreement between Treasury and the Public Record Office that any post-1920 records could be destroyed from 1959 as the out-letters were on Treasury registered files. Records from 4 Oct 1920 to July 1952 destroyed.

Administrative / biographical background

The assembly of volumes of handwritten out-letters goes back to the 17th century. From the 1870s when typewriters were used in the Treasury typed copies of letters would be found on the Treasury registered files, and a decision was made in 1958 to destroy copies of Out-Letters from 1920.
