Administrative / biographical background

The Inter-Service Metallurgical Research Council (ISMRC) was established in 1948 to advise the Ministry of Supply and Admiralty on metallurgical research of interest to service departments. It was to review critically metallurgical research programmes of the Ministry of Supply and Admiralty, taking into account relevant research conducted elsewhere. It was also to recommend new research projects as well as advising on facilities required for metallurgical research and its possible applications.

Membership of the council reflected various independent interests as well as official representation from service departments. The council set up a number of standing committees to consider specialized aspects of metallurgical research. Initially they were: Basic Properties of Metals Committee; Corrosion and Electrodeposition Committee; Ferrous (and Non-Ferrous) Metals committees; and the Heat Resistant Materials Committee. A Ceramic Materials Committee was formed at a later date.

The secretariat to the council was supplied by a branch in the Materials Research and Development (Air) Division of the Ministry of Supply. This function continued to be carried out by the Materials Branch, under its various guises, as the organization moved from the Ministry of Supply into the Ministry of Aviation and the Ministry of Technology. The ISMRC was wound up sometime between 1969 and 1971.
