The Employment and Lifelong Learning Directorate was set up in 1995 following the establishment of the Department for Education and Employment. The Directorate had responsibility for employment and adult training, equal opportunities, technology, overseas labour, employment training policy, individual commitment andthe JSA project.. In 2001 the Directorate lost its employment responsibilities when that area moved to the newly established Department for Work and Pensions. Responsibilities relating to Lifelong Learning, adult and vocational learning remained.
