Copies, translations and extracts from the original correspondence of foreign ministers resident in England, intercepted before delivery.
The copies or extracts, before they were sent to the Secretaries of State or other ministers concerned, were first translated where the language used in the original correspondence was other than English or French. The original letters were then sealed up again and allowed to proceed to their destination. Apparently it was common practice to open diplomatic despatches in other countries.
The letters are arranged in strict chronological order except for late additions to the series, and envelopes or covers for the despatches which are placed at the end.
The series of intercepted despatches is continued in British Library Additional MSS 32, 300 et passim.
A large quantity of the records perished (through neglect) at some time before 1838 at the Old State Paper Office.
