Correspondence and papers relating to the government of Ireland during the reign of Henry VIII. The records include letters to and from the King's chief ministers (including Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Essex), the Lord Lieutenant or the Lord Deputy, the Governor's Council, and other officials. Some letters to and from the King and the Privy Council are included, along with petitions, draft letters, instructions, reports and miscellaneous papers.
The papers were rearranged and rebound into a chronological sequence by the State Paper Office in the nineteenth century, preparatory to the publication of its calendars. This rearrangement was carried so far that enclosures, in order that they might be placed in correct date order, were often separated from their accompanying letter. The fundamental arrangement of the series has not changed, however, since the publication of the list for the series in 1914.
