The reign of Mary I saw a quieter period in Anglo-Scots relations, despite the usual Border incidents, thanks to a determined attempt by Mary and her young cousin Mary, Queen of Scot's regents to maintain amicable relations. In 1557, Scotland was drawn into Anglo-French hostilities on the French side, but neither the Scots nor the English had much appetite for their current leaders, the French Queen Dowager in Scotland and Philip of Spain, the Queen's consort, in England, and a truce was reached in the British theatre of the war.
