SP 44
1660-1828
Entry books kept by the Secretaries of State mainly to 1782. The records, formerly known as 'S.P. Dom-Entry Books', comprise King's letters, secretary's letters, warrants, petitions and reports on them, caveats, licences and passes. Thus they reflect the outward dealings and in-office decisions of the secretaries, chiefly arising out of their domestic responsibilities, though there is some foreign material, and a few entries relate to Ireland.
The topics include: criminal matters; secretarial out-letters on domestic subjects; ecclesiastical, university and other educational and charitable foundations in which the crown had an interest; King's letters, written by the secretaries on the monarch's behalf, chiefly to excuse absentee office holders or nominate for charitable purposes; military and naval affairs (complementing the incoming military and naval papers); petitions and their referral; regencies (outletters from the secretaries while the monarch was out of the kingdom), together with the papers of the Lords Justices' Regency Council; Treasury letterbooks 1763-1783; and warrants (some separated from SP 57) and passes.
This series contains warrant books separated from HO 38
SP 44/1-76, which has very little material after 1688, is arranged by chronology and secretary, while the rest of the series is arranged topically.
