Description

This series consists of 28 parchment documents which belong to the State Papers Domestic series of the Interregnum period (SP 18 to SP 28). The origin of the series is obscure, though it may have been one series with SP 26.

Over half the documents are assignments of leases, most of them in London and its surrounding counties, though two relate to Irish lands. Only a few of the documents are connected; for example the three which concern the manor of Hemel Hempstead. One concerns a sale by the trustees for Crown Lands. There is a military commission and a very fine specimen order from the Committee of Safety to the commissioners of the Treasury to pay the officers.

Arrangement

The series is arranged in three boxes (pieces): SP 27/1-3. Previously the three boxes were known as Boxes C, D and E. These previous box references are endorsed in ink on the dorse of the parchments. The documents were later re-referenced and were awarded some altered numbers in pencil. These numbers have been used as the references in the Calendar and also as the item references in the series. The original numbers are shown in the Former Reference field, where appropriate. The significance of the pencilled 'G' on the dorse of the documents is not certain (it is possible that is a reference to the editor of the Calendar, M A E Green).

It is difficult to say what brought these papers together, though an even older numbering system, which appears with endorsements of the date of the documents (not all accurate), suggests that most of them were kept together.

The majority of the records are calendared in the Calendar of State Papers Domestic series (of the Commonwealth) ed M A E Green 13 vols (London 1875-1886). Please speak to staff at the Map and Large Document Room enquiry desk for the precise location.
