The papers were held in the Treasury of the Receipt of the Exchequer, located in the Chapter House of Westminster Abbey. In 1832, the State Paper Commission requested the Home Office to order the transfer of the papers to the State Paper Office.

Administrative / biographical background

In April 1540, when Cromwell gave up the post of secretary, Wriothesley was appointed as one of the two replacement principal secretaries, with Ralph Sadler: these two men were subsequently seen as the first holders of the double office of Secretary of State.
