Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Rover (commander John Mitchell).

History: an American privateer (sloop, 100 tons, 8 carriage guns, 16 swivel guns, 35 men) bound from Boston, Massachusetts on a cruise off New York; taken on 1 December 1777 about 300 or 400 leagues from New York in latitude 38°30'N, longitude 66°W by HMS Sphynx (Anthony Hunt commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-7:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Samuel Cuthbert, master at arms, 11 April 1778;
  • [CP 2]: depositions of George Edwards, Robert Kenyon and Isaac Daniels, 18 December 1777;
  • [CP 3-CP 4]: two depositions of Samuel Cuthbert, 13 April 1778;
  • [CP 5-CP 6]: two depositions of William Elder, master gunner, 14 April 1778;
  • [CP 7]: deposition of Heseltine, for the Procurator General Crespigny, 5 May 1778

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-14 (large pencil numbers): one paper added to HCA 32/410/5. All sorted and renumbered in 2025].
