Captured ship: Rover (commander John Mitchell).
History: an American privateer (sloop, 100 tons, 8 carriage guns, 16 swivel guns, 35 men) bound from Boston, Massachusetts on a cruise off New York; taken on 1 December 1777 about 300 or 400 leagues from New York in latitude 38°30'N, longitude 66°W by HMS Sphynx (Anthony Hunt commanding), and brought into New York.
