Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Rose Noble (master John Coffin).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 40 tons) bound from Boston, Massachusetts to the West Indies, laden with fish, lumber; taken on 3 July 1776 [this may be a mis-remembering: see SP 3] about 30 leagues south of Nantucket by HMS Halifax schooner (Lieutenant William Quarme commanding).

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers [numbered by the court] brought in by Quarme, 19 December 1777 [c 18 months later];
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Quarme v The schooner Rose Noble and her cargo, 24 December 1777.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-3:- (Rhode Island papers)

  • SP 1: ship's register (owners George Smith, Christopher Hussey, Sylvanus Hussey, Joseph Hewsey), Newport, Rhode Island, 22 October 1767; John Coffin appointed master, Nantucket, 27 June 1776;
  • SP 2: customs declaration, Nantucket, 27 June 1776 (given as regnal year 16 Geo III);
  • SP 3: invoice of cargo, Nantucket, 24 July 1776 (given as 7 mo 24 1776).

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-4; Ship's papers: 5-8 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
