British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.
Captured ship: Richmond of Baltimore (commander Hezekiah Hughes).
History: an American merchant ship fitted out in a warlike manner (brigantine, 120 tons, 6 guns, 35 men), bound from Baltimore, Maryland to Havana, laden with flour; taken on 29 September 1782 about 30 leagues south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina by HMS Ceres (James Hawkins commanding), and HMS Perseverance (Skeffington Lutwidge commanding), and brought into New York.
Court papers: 1-10; Ship's papers: 11-18. [These are interim paper numbers, and are likely to change once more fully catalogued].
A further American ship Fellowship (the former British ship Felicity (master Henry Tickell) taken in June 1782 by American armed vessels and brought into Salem) was also taken by HMS Ceres (James Hawkins commanding), and brought into New York in November 1782, but no papers have been found in HCA 32: however, appeal papers exist in HCA 42/122/4
