Captured ship: Protheé of St Malo (master Alexandre Morin).
History: a French merchant ship (snow, 80 tons, 8 men), bound from St Malo to St Pierre et Miquelon, laden with salt, brandy, sail cloth, merchandise; taken on 17 August 1778 in latitude 49°30'N by HMS Fox (Thomas Windsor commanding), and brought into Plymouth.
On board were three French men seeking to settle in the islands of St Pierre et Miquelon: Jean LeRoy a painter, Pierre Labbe an architect, and Jean Nenel, a young man without profession.
Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-10. [These are interim paper numbers, and are likely to change once more fully catalogued. Further papers added from HCA 42 in 2024].
