British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.
Captured ship: Proteus (master William Probey).
History: an American merchant ship (schooner 30 tons, 5 men), bound from St Croix to Nixonton, North Carolina, laden with rum, sugar, salt molasses, dry goods; taken on 20 June 1777 off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina in latitude 36°03'N, longitude 31°'W by HMS Galatea (Thomas Jordan commanding), and brought into New York.
Court papers: 1-3; Ship's papers: 4-6. [These are interim paper numbers, and are likely to change once more fully catalogued].
